The National At-Risk Education Network

Anthony S.
Dallmann-Jones, PhD

Anthony Dallmann-Jones, PhD, founder and director of the National At-Risk Education Network (NAREN), has been a well-known advocate for at-risk youth and their educators for many years. He has found that there is often an absence of an effective voice and organized support system to address perspectives on the critical issues in at-risk education that both students and educators must face on a daily basis. Society and its school systems generally appear to be in denial, or confused and frustrated as to the best action steps to take. Meanwhile, the at-risk youth and the educators who care about them are frequently misunderstood and isolated. It is from these roots that Dr. Dallmann-Jones formed his ARME (or "At-Risk Mindful Educator") website and newsgroup in 1997. From these roots NAREN came to fruition.

Photo Dr. Dallmann-Jones, a graduate of Florida State University, was born into extreme poverty in Mobile, Alabama, and experienced first hand the impact of being raised in a dysfunctional family. He began teaching in 1965 in the small rural Ohio town of Spencerville. Since then he has taught in middle schools, high schools, colleges and medium-security prisons. He was a central office educational administrator in Jacksonville, Florida, and a Title III project director on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.

Dr. Dallmann-Jones helped design the first At-Risk Master's degree program in the United States, which now graduates an average of 20 teachers a year who specialize in working with at-risk youth. He has worked on behalf of at-risk "street children" with the Police Athletic League, in halfway houses, as a psychotherapist, and on three different Native American reservations.

Dr. Dallmann-Jones has written several books, including:

Dr. Dallmann-Jones is currently a graduate professor of educational psychology at Marian College. He speaks nationwide in schools, to civic groups and at conventions on both educational at-risk issues and teacher rejuvenation issues.
